I post this since it has an email theme.
So being the privacy officer for my company and always being a proponent of privacy for many years..this burns me a little to hear things like these, but at the same time shows just how people have become complacent in separation of business and personal when it comes to their email and other communication efforts. This is our own fault since we have this odd reasoning to always be in contact or be contacted. Blackberries, longer work hours, working from home, etc are a catalyst to this issue.
For me, things such as having a separate mobile phone for business and one for personal is essential not only for controlling the calls that come in, but I don’t want my company knowing my personal time and what I do outside of the company. I know sales people like to take their numbers with them for their contacts so they tend to use the same phone number for both business and personal, but your running the risk of exposing your personal details to your employer if they are paying for that bill/phone. I know in this article this wasn’t one of those policies where the company was allowed to review any content that was on the employee’s laptop…they egregiously violated his privacy with intention to snoop on his personal email.
I am interested thought to see how they accessed his account? did he save his password in cookies on his work laptop?
Folks, separate your personal life from work. Try not to make personal calls, emails, or other items using corporate systems. I know this is a hard thing to do, but if you want to protect your privacy in this age of growing information sharing you have to create that separation. Don’t save your logins and passwords in your browser just to save 5 seconds of login time.
